Weight Training May Positively Affect Os Calcis
The effect of weight training on the skeletal status of postmenopausal women was studied over 10 weeks. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the forearm, lumbar spine and hip; broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) was used to assess skeletal changes at the os calcis (the heel bone).
Considerable strength gains were seen in the weight-training group, but no significant changes in absorptiometrically assessed BMD were found in either group. There was a significant increase in BUA at the os calcis in those who attended 10 or more sessions of the weight-training program, and this measure was significantly greater than for controls' postintervention. Weight training may positively affect skeletal status at the os calcis in healthy postmenopausal women.
