Finding a Safe Way to Train the Back

The goals of safe back stabilization exercises are primarily to improve muscle reaction time and endurance. Although training the back can be relatively straightforward, the fundamental steps are not often followed.

This paper outlines the key elements of a safe workout routine to rehabilitate and condition the back. The author provides a step-by-step discussion of "safe back training," including:

  • motor control training;
  • exercise progressions;
  • troubleshooting; and
  • clinical integration.

Numerous charts and illustrations complement the text and provide an overview of safe back training. The author states that "by emphasizing endurance training of key spinal stabilizers, positive outcomes have been achieved."
