Chitari Foundation Unveils Plans for Integrative Healing Community

The Chitari Foundation, a nonprofit foundation, unveiled its plans last month for an integrative medical and educational healing community near Portland, OR. The foundation is headed by Dr. Satya Ambrose, who wanted to provide an environment where all healing modalities can be integrated together. The idea for Chitari, which means "meeting place" in Nepalese, originally started more than 10 years ago.

Chitari will be composed of four parts:

  • an inpatient, integrative healing and renewal center
  • a holistic outpatient health clinic
  • a sustainable organic farm and market
  • a research and education center

The integrative inpatient center will consist of two elements. The first will be a place where people can detoxify via the individualized application of natural therapeutics. The second element will be for people with more acute medical problems that require "hospitalization" to effectively address the imbalances that have disrupted their vitality. This will be done by utilizing naturopathic and Chinese medical principles. The inpatient aspect of Chitari will also include in-depth support and education to integrate significant lifestyle changes that are often necessary for the healing process. There will be on-site cooking facilities to instruct patients on all aspects of optimal nourishment.

The research and education center will offer classes to the community on subjects ranging from child/parent nutrition to sustainable building practices. The education center will be working with Portland public schools to promote healthy habits. Academic programs, in connection with existing colleges and universities, will offer internships and residencies. Research will be undertaken to study the effects of holistic health practices, and sustainable agriculture and building.

An organic farm and community farmers' market will grow food used in the inpatient facility and also make it available to the community. The farm will work with the education center to teach organic farming techniques, as well as healthy cooking.
