ND Community Mourns Passing of Bastyr Co-Founder
By Kathryn Feather, Associate Editor
Naturopathic physician and Bastyr University co-founder Dr. William A. Mitchell Jr., 59, suffered a heart attack and died suddenly Jan. 23 in Seattle.
Tragically, his death followed that of his son Noah, 27, who passed away earlier that day. Both deaths were attributed to myocardial infarction.
According to a press release issued by Bastyr University, "The nation's, and indeed the world's, natural medicine community is in mourning. Dr. Mitchell was not only a doctor and teacher, he was an author and philosopher who thought deeply and creatively about the nature of healing and whose questions and ideas stimulated others to do the same."
Dr. Mitchell graduated from National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1976 and maintained a botanical and internal medicine practice in Seattle for the past 30 years. In 1978, he helped to co-found Bastyr University and served as its first dean of admissions as well as on the board of trustees for many years. He is the author of several books, including Naturopathic Applications of the Botanical Remedies, Foundations of Natural Therapeutics: Biochemical Apologetics of Naturopathic Medicine and Plant Medicine in Practice: Using the Teachings of John Bastyr, ND. At the time of his death, he was working on a case-based textbook of naturopathic therapeutics, demonstrating the application and efficacy of naturopathic medicine through the use of clinical cases.
He is survived by his parents and siblings; his daughters, Rachel Colburn and Leah Mitchell, ND; his son, Saul Mitchell, and his son-in-law, Richard Colburn; his grandchildren, David Mitchell and Regan Colburn; and his wife, Roberta Mitchell.
Personal cards and commemorations can be sent to Bastyr University, where they will be forwarded to the family:
