New Leadership at NCNM

Dr. David J. Schleich takes over in April as new CEO and president.

By Meghan Vivo, Associate Editor

The board of National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) recently announced the selection of Dr. David J. Schleich as the college's new chief executive officer and president.

Prior to assuming this position with NCNM, Dr. Schleich served as CEO and president of Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM). In addition, Dr. Schleich acted as vice president academic of Niagara College, and held administrative and teaching posts at St. Lawrence College, Swinburne College (Australia) and the University of Alberta. Dr. Schleich earned his doctorate in theory and policy studies, higher education, from the University of Toronto. He also holds a master's in English language and literature.

Some of Dr. Schleich's professional accomplishments during his tenure as CEO/president of CCNM include re-engineering operation systems, generating an asset base of $24 million within 60 months, increasing the operating budget and revenues 10-fold, quintupling enrollment, creating a research division with a revenue stream of $1.4 million, developing and establishing Canada's largest naturopathic teaching clinic (43 treatment rooms and a full lab facility), and establishing a college press that has published 13 titles to date.

"We look forward to the next chapter in the history of NCNM and the profession of natural medicine under the vibrant and visionary leadership of Dr. David Schleich," said NCNM board chair, Nancy W. Garbett.

Dr. Schleich will begin his term of office on April 2, 2007, and will work closely with departing president, Dr. William J. Keppler, during a transition period. Dr. Keppler will continue to be actively involved as an ambassador for NCNM. Since his inauguration in January 2003, Dr. Keppler has had a significant impact on the college and the profession. Under his leadership, NCNM received regional accreditation, regained solid financial ground, re-established and grew a research department, and brought credible testimony to the licensing campaign before the U.S. Department of Education.

In 2003, Dr. Keppler was honored with a distinguished service award for his assistance to the Council for Naturopathic Medicine (CNME). With Dr. Keppler's guidance, CNME obtained federal recognition as a national accrediting agency. Further, NCNM received five years of re-accreditation by the Accreditation Commission on Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and five years of institutional accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

When the American Association of Naturopathic Colleges sought a recommendation from the federal government to classify NDs as medical professionals in the same category as MDs, Dr. Keppler was selected by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education to represent the interests of all accredited naturopathic medical colleges on a Department of Education Technical Review Panel, which included 35 participants from the fields of medicine, engineering, education and architecture. Among his most impressive accomplishments, Dr. Keppler increased NCNM's Department of Education Composite Ratio from .30 in January 2003 to its current score of +1.80, more than the minimum pass level of +1.50.

"NCNM may not even exist today had it not been for Dr. Keppler's foresight, tenacity and masterful ability to create community," said Garbett.
