Inside the Profession

Naturopathic Medicine Highlighted at Alberta Research Conference

The Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, recently played host to the first North American Research Conference on Complementary and Integrative Medicine.

Sponsored by the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, the conference was designed to promote educational collaboration across the spectrum of health disciplines, and featured presentations from some of the world's leading researchers and health care providers on a variety of complementary and integrative approaches to care.

Researchers representing a variety of integrative health care professions made poster and abstract presentations at the conference, including several naturopathic physicians. Jane Guiltinan, ND; Katherine Newton, PhD; Susan Reed, MD, MPH; Andrea LaCroix, PhD; Louis Grothaus, MA; and Kelly Ehrlich, MS, presented a study titled "Herbal Alternatives for Menopause Symptoms," which demonstrated the effectiveness of three herbal approaches based on a naturopathic approach to care. Lynne Shinto, ND, MPH; Joel Edman, DSc; and Iris Bell, MD, PhD, presented a panel on clinical approaches to diet and supplements, including research considerations.

"Considerations for the Incorporation of Dietary and Nutritional Supplement Guidelines Into an Integrative Medicine Research Model" discussed important dietary issues, integrative nutrition and medicine, foundation diets, and supplement programs, among other topics.

The North American Research Conference on Complementary & Integrative Medicine marked the first time that all consortium centers and other leading national and international CAM networks and organizations had been invited to come together to meet and share their research findings in a single location. The Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine was established in 2002, and consists of 32 schools of medicine in the United States and Canada. Its mission, according to a statement on the consortium's Web site, is "to help transform medicine and health care through rigorous scientific studies, new models of clinical care, and innovative educational programs that integrate biomedicine, the complexity of human beings, the intrinsic nature of healing and the rich diversity of therapeutic systems."

For more information on the consortium, including a list of all presen-tations delivered at the conference and the dates of future research conferences, visit www.imconsortium.org.

Naturopathic Legislative Updates: Illinois and New York

Three bills currently are progressing through the state level that will provide for the licensure of naturopathic doctors in New York and Illinois. Proponents of the bills feel the changes are overdue and will strengthen the profession by sifting out practitioners who are unqualified and undereducated.

In Illinois, S.B.2824 is currently in the Rules Committee. This bill creates a Naturopathic Medical Practice Act and "provides for the regulation of naturopathic physicians through licensure by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, establishes the Board of Naturopathic Medicine, the Naturopathic Childbirth Attendance Advisory Committee, and the Naturopathic Formulary Committee." It also "sets forth provisions concerning licensure, scope of practice, duties of the Department, and administrative procedure."

In New York, S.B.1617 and A.B.5208 support licensure for naturopathic doctors in the state. The purpose of these bills is to regulate the practice of naturopathic medicine, establish a state board for naturopathic medicine, establish requirements to receive a license in naturopathic medicine, and establish mandatory continuing competency for naturopaths.

If the bills become law, candidates for licensure will be required to graduate from CNME-accredited naturopathic schools, pass the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners examination (NPLEX) and register with a state board. Currently, 14 states and the District of Columbia license naturopathic doctors. Licensure efforts are underway in at least nine other states as of press time.

The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), as part of its ongoing campaign in support of legislation that will advance the profession, has created online letters that can be mailed out to state officials, urging them to support the legislation. Naturopathic doctors can find these letters on the AANP Web site at: New York and Illinois.
