NCNM Celebrates Golden Anniversary
On Sunday, May 28, National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) President, William Keppler, PhD, current students, faculty and staff celebrated NCNM's 50th anniversary on a cruise aboard the Portland Spirit. Many of the school's 1,400 alumni also were in attendance, as well as the president of Bastyr University, Daniel K. Church, PhD, and Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine President, Paul Mittman, ND, DHANP.
Among the festivities, a cake-cutting ceremony at the NCNM campus at precisely 1:30 p.m. marked exactly 50 years to the minute since Drs. Frank Spaulding, Martin Bleything, and Charles Stone signed the incorporation papers for the College in Salem, Ore., on May 28, 1956. The school, at one time located in Seattle and then Kansas, made Portland its permanent home in 1975. NCNM is assembling a time capsule of donations from alumni, staff and faculty to be sealed this summer and reopened in 2056, the 100th anniversary of the college. Those who have memorabilia and are willing to donate it to the capsule project are encouraged to call Melissa at (503)552-1710.
Other golden anniversary events scheduled for this summer include a dinner for alumni and friends on Thursday, Aug. 10 and a 50th anniversary party the following day. For more details and information regarding these events, please contact Mark at (503)552-1601. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians annual convention, to be held in Portland Aug. 9-12, has adopted the theme "Honor NCNM" in recognition of the accomplishments of the school's alumni and founders and to mark this golden anniversary. The convention will include an alumni reception following the NCNM dinner on Thursday, Aug. 10. For convention details, please visit the AANP Web site at www.naturopathic.org.
